Han Solo sketch card by SvenjaLiv Han Solo sketch card by SvenjaLiv
After various people told me I should try sketch cards, and others told me I should try colouring pencils, I decided to be lazy and combine the two. Here's the result - Han Solo in the carbon-freezing chamber. I picked Han because he's easy to draw. :XD:

I'd appreciate critique and feedback on this one... it's my first try, and I want to learn how to do these properly!

Fun fact: I realised that the colouring pencils I used for this are realy old... my godmother gave them to me when I was about seven or eight! That should tell you how often I do this.

Media: Faber-Castell colouring pencils on 2.5" x 3.5" Bristol paper.
Time: 1 1/2 hours.
Reference: Still from The Empire Strikes Back.

The colors really set this piece off for me : ) His right on, on our left, looks a little wonky to me. I'm not sure if it's the size or something with the color. I feel like maybe it should be little darker as that side of his face is in the shadow. It is inspiring me to try some color pencils though! I'm also now very interested in sketch cards. Amazon here I come.

Yeah, I think I messed up the eyes.. they're too big, I reckon. Thank you, though! I'm glad it inspired you. Coloured pencils are quite fun to use :D I've never gotten into trading cards, but they're a challenge to draw for sure!

You're braver than me. I never use colored pencils because they have no undo button. ;P

The colors look really neat though. Great job!

*lol* Very true, but erasers work fairly well and if it goes really wrong you can always start over. :D Thank you!

nice...lovely colors...I'm sure with practice you'll be really brilliant with colored pencils...I'd like to see you revisit this image in a year or so to see the improvement.

His right eye looks a bit to big compared to his left eye.
The coloring is amazing though. And of course it's way better than anything I could do.

Huh, could be... it's hard to judge proportions at that size. Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. :aww:

Aah, isn't it nice to blend with pencils? Have to think which specific colours will bring out the perfect blend and all (unless you have 100 different colours, but what's the fun in that?)..

It's very colourful yet fitting, nice job! :aww:

It's a challenge, for sure! I only used 12 pencils for this one, actually, yeah. It's fun to blend them together - difficult though. I think I need more practice. :D

I'm glad you like it, thank you so much!

Ok..well.. It looks really good and you did an amazing job at this piece.
I love the idea of using colouring pencils. I love the lighting as well, as someone had said before.

there are some problems and I wish I was upgraded to premium membership, but I want to point these few things out. firstly, the right eye looks calm and like his smuggler look, very professional, but the left eye looks like he is about to break down and cry.. I don't know if you ment that or not. Secondly, This one isn't a big deal I just want to point this out anyways; The scar..... its not there....and if it is then I'm officially blind. Other then those two little details, this is an amazing piece and you have done a terrific job with his hair and the rest of his face and just everything looks really good.
:D

Thanks for the critique! You're right about the eyes. It's like he's got two halves to his face... well I blame the reference. And Harrison Ford's crooked face. *lol* As for the scar, it's there in theory - the line under his mouth is supposed to be it. :XD: But I guess it's not very clear. I need to get better pencils so I can do more details!

Thank you very much for the detailed comment! I really appreciate it. And I'm glad you like the card as well! :glomp:

No Problem, its what I do, and have been doing every since I created this account.

The scar I think mainly needs to be a bit wider, a little more detailed, and it doesn't need to go down like that, the scar is more like a line going across his face....

Can't wait to see the next Han Solo sketch card. Just do your best and don't pressure yourself. :D

I like it!!! Great lighting on his face

I used to make ATC's all the time, I loved it ... never really drawing though, always weird and random :giggle:
Are sketch cards something different to ATC's?

For something so tiny, I don't think you could get much better you know, maybe darken the background a wee bit more to make him really pop, but I think it's great just as it is :tighthug:

I love the lighting in this scene. And I'm glad you like this!

I think it's basically the same thing? I'm not sure. Like I said, I'm new to the whole thing. I definitely want to do more of them though, it's fun and they have the big advantage of being finished pretty fast!

Good point on the background, I'll definitely keep that in mind! But wow, thank you! I'm really happy to hear that. :aww:
